My favorite reads of 2020

Even though 2020 was a long and hard year in many ways, I still found many many books to add to my favorites list. Here were my favorites.

Empire of War & Wings Series

The Empire of War and Wings series by Sarah K.L. Wilson was hands down my favorite series of 2020 and made it into my top 10 series of all time. The first book, Sting Magic, pulls you in and set you on a wild ride that doesn’t stop until the last book.

In a world where magic comes in the form of manifesting birds, Aella of House Shrike is deemed a renegade when she manifests bees. And it’s up to her to figure out how to use her magic, decide is the mysterious Osprey is a friend or a foe, and unravel the dark secrets at the heart of the Empire. Above all, she has to be relentless.

There are five books total:

  1. Sting Magic

  2. Hive Magic

  3. Wing Magic

  4. Swarm Magic

  5. Queen Magic.

This was the first series I’ve read by Sarah K.L. Wilson and they all came out in 2020 (Sarah, if you're reading this, send some of your magic writing dust my way!). This year I plan to work my way through her backlist because if this series was so good, I can’t wait to read her other ones.

On Wings and Ash

On Wings and Ash is a prequel novella to The Immortal Voices: Green and Gold series. It’s a magic and romance set in Ancient Greece. The books sets up and interesting world that I can't wait to read more about.

The rest of The Immortal Voices: Green and Gold series is out now and on my TBR list for 2021:

Book 1: Secrets of Green and Gold

Book 2: Shadows of Green and Gold

Book 3: Darkness in Green and Gold

Book 4: Daybreak in Green and Gold

Wolf Girl

Wolf Girl was my last read of 2020 and now all I can do is live in painful anticipation for the next book in the series! I devoured the book in one sitting. It has everything I love: fast paced action, strong characters I connect with, shifters, magic, and romance.

Demi, an exiled werewolf, lands herself in the middle of Werewolf Bachelor when the alpha’s son need to pick his next mate. But once Demi get to Werewolf City and Sawyer unlocks the cuffs binding her magic she transforms into a werewolf and has to figure out why before the vampires and fae who are hunting her figure it out first.

The second book in the series Lost Girl is up for pre-order now and releases later this month! I can’t wait.

The Crow Rider

The Crow Rider is the second half of a duology that starts with The Storm Crow. The Crow Rider was a great finish to this original fantasy that deals with forgotten magic, mental health, and the best things ever: Magical elemental crows big enough to ride!

How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories

Oh Folk of the Air. How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories was another fantastic edition to the saga that started with The Cruel Prince. It’s in Cardan’s point of view and tells stories of the young prince of Elfhame and and adventure that takes place after the events of the The Queen of Nothing. I loved every word of it. But let’s be real, I could read 700 pages of nothing but Cardan and Jude yearning and snarking at one another.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

Have you ever read a book that just leaves you speechless? The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue was a beautifully written, fascinating, and original tale. I don’t have the words to describe how Addie’s story resonated with me. All I can say is read it and prepare to be swept away.

Fable

Fable is part one of a duology by Adrienne Young. If you love high seas adventures, found family, and fierce female characters you’ll love Fable. Young wraps deep emotional questions and characters who truly feel real into a story with high stakes, high adventure, and a touch of magic. The second book, Namesake, is on preorder now and comes out in March.

Cursebreakers Series

Remember January 2020 when the world was mostly normal? It feels like a different lifetime ago. It was January when I read A Curse so Dark and Lonely and A Heart so Fierce and Broken, the first two books in the Cursebreaker series. The first book is a retelling of Beauty of the Beast that takes the original tale and gives it an engaging and fascinating spin. The second book catapults the reader further into the world Brigid Kemmerer created. I can’t wait to read the conclusion in the third book, A Vow so Bold and Deadly which is out now!
